Blogging FAQ

General Comments

The blog is intended to be conversational and interactive. I want people to post things, and other people responding by adding comments.

  • You need to write a blog entry every week. These are due by 11:59pm Saturday.
    • Your blog entry must contain a link(s) to the original article(s).
  • You need to add 3 comments to the blog every week.
  • The topic of the blog entry needs to be related to the focus of this course.
  • A perfect blog score for the week is 100 where 85 points comes from the blog entry and 15 from your comments.

Frequently asked questions

How long do blog entries need to be? I am grading more on quality and interestingness rather than length but as a guide this post by Lessig would be the max I would expect and this post is a bit short. So aim for something between those two.

How are blog entries graded? My general rule of thumb for an 'A' is that the blog entry is of sufficient quality to appear in a commercial blog. For a 'B' I need to see some evidence that you put some effort into the post (the topic relates to the course, and the post is free of structural problems). My recommendation is that minimally you write a draft; save it (but not publish); take a break of at least an hour (overnite is better); and then revise & edit and then finally publish.

Can I hand in late assignments? You have three slip days you can use anyway you want (for ex., one assignment can be 3 days late).

Can you be more specific about the topics of the blogs--what can I write about? Your post can be anything about remix and mashups. It can expand on an idea presented in one of our readings, it can report about some story related to copyright, it can describe some creative mashup and remix work.

What do comments need to be like? Comments can range from a short sentence to a paragraph or more and the number of points you get varies with the length and quality of your post. A short sentence might be worth 2 points. A well presented 2 paragraph comment might be worth 25 or more. Remember that you need to write 3 comments a week.
